Check Theft Alert in Our Area
📬🚨 Check Theft Alert in Our Area
We’ve been seeing a rise in mailbox check theft nearby. Thieves are stealing checks out of residential mailboxes, altering them, and then cashing them.
💳 How It Works:
Thieves take checks placed in mailboxes (especially with the flag up).
They change the payee name or the amount.
The altered checks are then deposited or cashed.
⚠️ Warning Signs to Watch For:
Checks you’ve mailed never reach the recipient.
Unfamiliar or suspicious withdrawals from your account.
A bank notification about a check that doesn’t match what you wrote.
🛡️ How to Protect Yourself:
Use online bill pay when possible.
Drop mail directly at the post office inside.
Avoid leaving outgoing mail overnight.
Monitor your bank account regularly for unusual activity.
📍 If You’re a Victim:
Report immediately to the Local Police Department.
Contact your bank to stop or dispute the fraudulent transaction.
Place a fraud alert with credit reporting agencies if needed.
